Denis MacShane has been the Member of Parliament for Rotherham since May 1994. He was named a Minister at the Foreign Office by Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2001 and was Minister for Europe from 2002-2005. He was sworn as a Privy Councillor in June 2005.
Denis was born in Glasgow and educated at Oxford (MA) and London University (Ph D).
Denis started his career as a BBC reporter. Before becoming an MP, he worked for the international trade union movement promoting trade union rights and wrote books on the steel industry as well as on global political issues. He set up and was first chairman of the Steel Group of MPs in the House of Commons and works closely with the steel industry and trade unions in South Yorkshire.
As MP for Rotherham, Denis is a strong supporter of the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce and has a track record in supporting business development in the local community. He is a member of Voluntary Action Rotherham with a keen interest for Rotherham’s thriving community and voluntary sector. He is Patron of Rotherham Carers Forum.
Denis enjoys sport and has run the London marathon twice, raising thousands of pounds for Rotherham charities. He watches Rotherham United, ‘The Millers’ and goes along to Rotherham Titans games when work and family duties permit.
Denis has four children at school and university.
